The Two Spots You Are Probably Skipping

There is so much focus on the face that most people forget their neck and chest. I was one of them. Recently I looked down to adjust my top and thought, oh my word, what is going on. My chest looked like it belonged to someone a hundred years old, which of course sent me straight to the mirror to check my neck. That was the moment I realized I had been skipping two areas that needed me just as much.

Most of us are devoted to our faces and completely ignore everything below the chin. We cleanse, moisturize, and fuss over the face, then stop cold at the jawline, as if the skin just ends there. It does not. Your neck and chest are some of the first places skin shows its age, and they are the most neglected skin you own.

The good news is you do not need another product for them. You just need to keep going.

Why the neck and chest show age first

The skin below your jaw is working against a few things at once. It is thinner than the skin on your face, with fewer oil glands to keep it soft, so it dries and creases more easily. It moves constantly, every time you turn your head or look down. It catches a lot of sun, often the most of anywhere, because it is the spot people forget to protect. And these days it folds over and over as we look down at our phones, the pattern people have started calling tech neck. Add all of that up and it is no surprise the neck and chest often give away more than the face does.

The fix is not a special neck cream

The beauty industry would love to sell you a separate neck cream, usually the same formula as your face cream with a higher price and a different label. You do not need it. The skin below your jaw wants the same things the skin above it does. Support the barrier, keep it soft, hold moisture in, and protect it. Whatever you are already doing for your face, simply carry it down.

How to actually do it

When you put on your cream or balm, do not stop at your jawline. Bring it down the sides and front of your neck and out across your chest, using gentle upward strokes rather than dragging down. It takes an extra ten seconds. Tallow is close to the oils your own skin makes, so it sinks in and reinforces the barrier on your neck exactly as it does on your face. For the broader area of the chest, the whipped texture of the day and night cream spreads easily and goes a long way.

The honest part

I am not going to tell you a cream erases neck lines or turns back the clock on skin that has had years of neglect. It will not, and anyone claiming that is selling you the same false hope in a taller bottle. What consistent, simple care does is help this fragile skin stay soft, supported, and resilient going forward, and it keeps the neglect from adding up. Prevention and support.

Once I started carrying my day and night cream down past my jaw, the difference showed up fast. The skin looked healthier and more alive almost right away, and the crepey look on my chest that had startled me began to soften. Now that extra thirty seconds is my favorite part of the ritual, not another item on my to do list.

Where we land

Your face does not end at your jaw, so your care should not either. The neck and chest ask for nothing fancy, just the same attention and the same few good things you already give the rest of your skin. Keep going past the jawline. That is the whole trick.

Your neck and chest have kept up with you all along. Give them the same care you give your face, and just keep going past the jaw.
